The Clinical Values of Cerebrospinal Fluid Lacatate Dehydrogenase Determination in Children with Meningitis

Abstract
The 100 cases of meningitis were reviewed that admitted to Chung Nam National University Hospital from May, 1991 to July, 1993, emphasizing on CSF LDH.
@ES The results were as follows;
1) The 100 cases of meningitis were consisted of aseptic meningitis of 77 cases and bacterial meningitis of 23 cases by diagnosed as clinical manifestations, peripheral blood examination, and CSF study.
2) Common chief complaints were fever, vomiting, and headache and on physical examination, neck stiffness, kerning's sign, and Brudzinski's sign were common.
3) Mean value of CSF LDH in bacterial meningitis and aseptic meningitis were each 276.5¡¾621.5 IU/L and 64.2¡¾39.0 IU/L, respectively and CSF LDH were significantly increased in bacterial meningitis
4) CSF LDH were related to CSF WBC, but not to CSF protein or CSF sugar.
5) In bacterial meningitis, 4 cases were revealed CSF organism by culture, Streptococcus(3cases) and Hemophilus influenza(1case) and CSF LDH in these cases was marked increased from 501 IU/L to 3521 IU/L.
Above findings suggest that CSF LDH is valuable in the differential diagnosis of bacterial and aseptic meningitis and follow-up of bacterial meningitis.
